Innovative artist and naturalist John James Audubon (1785–1851) documented American birds like never before in his landmark double-elephant-folio The Birds of America. The work’s engravings—hand colored and sent in batches to his subscribers—were based on his dazzling life-sized watercolors. Today, all 433 known preparatory watercolors are in the collection of the New-York Historical Society, including the twelve shown here.
